Why Can’t We Be Friends?

Tayo has two main conflicts in Ceremony; Man vs. Self and Man vs. Society. Since Tayo is mixed, a lot of people do not accept him into the Native American world, and since he is also part Native American, he is not fully accepted into the American society either. This is clearly present when at the bar, Emo makes fun of Tayo for being mixed, and they get into a fight. Also, the flashback to when Tayo was a child and Auntie was not too fond of Tayo and would treat Rocky better than him shows how much Tayo had to fight back his own family society and not just the society outside his family and friends.  Society was very cruel and not accepting of Native Americans in general, so the fact that Tayo is part Native American has him fighting against society as well. Tayo also does not fully understand who he is, which is what created the man vs. man conflict. Especially after the war when Tayo thinks he is a bad person for being part of the war, Tayo has trouble trying to figure out who exactly he is and what place he has in this world. SO far my favorite scene has been when Tayo and Rocky talk to the army recruiter, and Rocky is so fascinated with the idea of being in the war and being accepted and do something for a worthy cause. This shows the man vs. society conflict with both of the boys, because they think they are finally being accepted when in reality they are only being allowed in the military to get more men out there to fight and kill.
