And They All Lived Happily Ever After

Tayo’s main conflict was the conflict within himself. His PTSD and sense of not knowing who he really was is his biggest downfall throughout the book. At the end of the book, Tayo gets the help he needs from the Native American medicine which helps him get back on track. Tayo is able to gain the understanding that the war was not his fault and he is able to cope better with the situations he was put in because of the war.  I think the climax of the scene was when Tayo was with the girl and she really seemed to help him open up his eyes about the problems he was having and how to cope with them instead of letting them hurt Tayo like they were doing. After the whole situation with Emo occurs, Tayo gets a much better grasp on the reality of the war and how much the war messed him up. I think Tayos discovery that the war messed everyone up and not just him, and that many people had trouble coping with it just in their own way made Tayo feel like he wasn’t such of an outcast and that he was not alone for once. Also, knowing that he couldn’t have prevented all the killings and such helped him cope better with it too. The ending is good because it shows us that Tayo is on the path to recovery and that there is hope for his future.

  1. I agree with you Kelly, I am rooting for Tayo through the end of the novel just hoping he stays on the right track and finishes his recovery. The woman who remains nameless throughout the novel has this weird affect on Tayo and allows him to become normal almost! This girl allowed him to become almost normal and do normal things. I think she was great for Tayo

  2. I completely agree with the climax about Tayo meeting the girl. She seems to keep him grounded with not only her presence and care, but with her culture. He can see in her the values of tradition instilled in the youth of his people. Also found in the youth was the PTSD as you mentioned. Not knowing that other people went through the same thing made Tayo much more sick in a way.
