Forgivness Meditation

This meditation was interesting. I didnt like thinking of all the things ive done worng and whats been done to me that was wrong. My past isnt exaclty the greatest and there has been alot of things done to me that id rather forget, and some of these things can’t be forgivien. While i think it is good to forgive people sometimes, there are also some situations where you can’t do it, the situaution is too big and too horrible to fogive and you end up loosing some of the people who’ve helped make you how you are today because of the situation you’ve been through with them. I was very happy when the bell rang and the meditation was over and i didn’t have to think about that stuff anymore.

I am an emotional creature

Eve’s message about social justice is different from the others because she focused more on women and how strong they can be. In her speech, she helped empower women and gave examples of how she saw women who were being teared down and tried to be sold, yet they still stood strong and fought against it. The most powerful part of her speech was how she talked about how all of us have a little bit of women in us, and each of us have the will in us to be strong and stand up for what’s right. I also enjoyed the poem at the end. Women are emotional creature and while sometimes that could be bad, there are other times where that makes girls stronger and able to fight for something important because they feel so strongly about it.

My ” i hate the world and writing essays” rant

So far the research process for me is terrible. Its easy to find sources which is good i guess, but when all the ones im finding are books that are hundreds of pages long it makes me want to throw my laptop across the room, and the research i keep finding is repetative. It also doesnt help that I have been super busy with going home for 2 weekends in a row and being overwhelmed wit hwork that i end up doing this research at like midnight when im tired and half asleep and really dont feel like doing anything but sleeping. I feel completley lost on what im ever trying to find as my information and i keep picking out random things that seem useful now but probably wont be useful at all when i sit down to write my paper. I really am just not looking forward to actualy writing thsi paper because i think it is going to be long and time consuming and i dont think im going to get much sleep these next few weeks.

Annotated Bibliography

Cwikel, Julie, and Elizabeth Hoban. “Contentious Issues In Research On Trafficked Women Working In The Sex Industry: Study Design, Ethics, And Methodology.” Journal Of Sex Research 42.4 (2005): 306-316. Academic Search Complete. Web. 10 Oct. 2012.

In one section of this article, Cwikel and Hoban list nine reasons on why sex trafficking has become such a big issue. They talk about the sex industry becoming more global and that “social structure in most of the world is built on women’s inequality and economic dependence on male relatives.” A shocking thing that was discussed is that “War or military conflict has fuelled the demand for when to be brought to places of conflict so they camp provide sexual services for troops.” They continued on to say that there is usually “commodification of women’s bodies as sexual objects and therefore sale is common.” I will use this information to help me write about the causes of sex trafficking and why it has become so big.

Mathews, Stacey. “International Trafficking In Children: Will New U.S Legislation Provide An Ending To The Story?.” Houston Journal Of International Law 27.3 (2005): 649-702. Academic Search Complete. Web. 10 Oct. 2012.

Mathews’ text has a section about the causes and reasons behind why some areas have more sex trafficking then others. He suggests areas that have other organized crime makes it easier for sex trafficking to get started.  He goes on to say “the reason trafficking thrives in these locations is because law enforcement is overwhelmed and police conflict has led to involving officers in the sex rings”. Mathews  also says sex trafficking is “especially prominent in countries involved in armed conflict or civil unrest due to instability because it displaces women and children. I plan to use the information in this to help aid me in writing about the circumstances that cause the sex rings.

Sison-Arroyo, Nina Patricia. “Responsive Law Enforcement Approach To Combating Child Trafficking.” Ateneo Law Journal 52.4 (2008): 837-869. Academic Search Complete. Web. 10 Oct. 2012.

In this article, Sinson-Arroyo talks about creating a more efficient way to prosecute those who get arrested and involved in sex trafficking. She explains that those involved can be defined by “Recruitment, transportation, and transfer by means of threat of use of force of other forms of abduction, including the exploitation of the prostitution of others.” Sinson-Arroyo creates a better plan to use when prosecuting victims of sex trafficking. She suggests a rescue operation type plan. This includes “ensuring trafficked people are not being arrested and that they are informed of this”. I will use this information in my essay to explain solutions to the sex trafficking problem.

Databases

Today in the library i learned a lot of useful information about databases. I found out how to find data bases and how to search in them. One of the databses that i found very useful was the  CREDO Reference. I liked how the Concept Map was set up in a web and you could see how other topics and infroamtion realted to the topic you originally searched. I think this will help me narrow my topic and find inforation i would have never thought to search. I also liked the Academic Search Comple database where you could search multiple   topics and find aritcles that realate to all the topics. ALso i like how it will creat a MLA citation for you.  There are many other databases i have yet to explor and i fell liek having all the databases in one spot will help make research easier.  After   having search some on my topic i think it will be easy for me to find good reliable sources and information to aid me in writing my research paper.

Social Justice Part 2

Huey defined social justice in his talk about his encounter with a Native American reservation. He describes how he saw how horrible the impact was of the Native Americans being kicked off their land so many years ago and how even to this day it has had an effect on them.  Huey defined social justice by talking about how unfair it is that the Native Americans got kicked off their land when they were here first. He also talks about how unjust was to treat them so horribly when we kicked them off their land, and how the Native Americans have struggled since then. Social justice includes treating everyone right and not punishing or bullying a certain group or type of people.  Social justice also includes giving everyone a fair chance, which can’t be done when people are forced to live on certain plots of land.

Social Injustice

I found the talk by Stevenson to be very fascinating, but there was a part in the beginning that really stood out, and I hope to use that story to help me show how Stevenson defined social justice and injustice. During his speech, Stevenson told a story of how his grandma pulled him aside when he was young and made him promise that he would never drink alcohol. A couple years later, he and his siblings were in the woods and they had alcohol. His older brother kept trying to get him to drink it but he refused. Stevenson has gone his whole life without drinking, and has kept his promise to his grandma, yet people like his brother would pester him about it. I know it’s not a total injustice but it is not fair how people get treated when they stick up for what’s right and do the right thing. Stevenson made a promise to his grandma and he kept his promise, which now a days many people don’t do. It shouldn’t seem weird and it shouldn’t be made out to be a bad thing for people to actually keep their promise, and it’s sad that in today’s world many people are so used to lying and going back on promises that when someone actually does keep a promise people are surprised.

And They All Lived Happily Ever After

Tayo’s main conflict was the conflict within himself. His PTSD and sense of not knowing who he really was is his biggest downfall throughout the book. At the end of the book, Tayo gets the help he needs from the Native American medicine which helps him get back on track. Tayo is able to gain the understanding that the war was not his fault and he is able to cope better with the situations he was put in because of the war.  I think the climax of the scene was when Tayo was with the girl and she really seemed to help him open up his eyes about the problems he was having and how to cope with them instead of letting them hurt Tayo like they were doing. After the whole situation with Emo occurs, Tayo gets a much better grasp on the reality of the war and how much the war messed him up. I think Tayos discovery that the war messed everyone up and not just him, and that many people had trouble coping with it just in their own way made Tayo feel like he wasn’t such of an outcast and that he was not alone for once. Also, knowing that he couldn’t have prevented all the killings and such helped him cope better with it too. The ending is good because it shows us that Tayo is on the path to recovery and that there is hope for his future.

Why Can’t We Be Friends?

Tayo has two main conflicts in Ceremony; Man vs. Self and Man vs. Society. Since Tayo is mixed, a lot of people do not accept him into the Native American world, and since he is also part Native American, he is not fully accepted into the American society either. This is clearly present when at the bar, Emo makes fun of Tayo for being mixed, and they get into a fight. Also, the flashback to when Tayo was a child and Auntie was not too fond of Tayo and would treat Rocky better than him shows how much Tayo had to fight back his own family society and not just the society outside his family and friends.  Society was very cruel and not accepting of Native Americans in general, so the fact that Tayo is part Native American has him fighting against society as well. Tayo also does not fully understand who he is, which is what created the man vs. man conflict. Especially after the war when Tayo thinks he is a bad person for being part of the war, Tayo has trouble trying to figure out who exactly he is and what place he has in this world. SO far my favorite scene has been when Tayo and Rocky talk to the army recruiter, and Rocky is so fascinated with the idea of being in the war and being accepted and do something for a worthy cause. This shows the man vs. society conflict with both of the boys, because they think they are finally being accepted when in reality they are only being allowed in the military to get more men out there to fight and kill.

Somewhere Only We Know

Sitting in the sand around a fire pit, listening to the waves crash into the shore, laying in my boyfriend’s arms. This was the place I began with when the meditation first started. The scene switched and I was walking on the biking trail near my house. That’s where I found the tree. Our tree. The tree that we carved our initials into last June. I remember how we spotted it, and saw other names of past loves carved into it, so we decided to add ours as well. It is a very old, big tree. Some of the names carved had dates from the 80’s next to them. Names of people who have loved and lost, and names of those who actually found their true love at such a young age, and now our names are added to the list. I remembered how difficult it was to carve our names into it, and we searched for the sharpest rock we could find, yet it still took about 15 minutes to only carve a C and a K. As cliché as it is, the tree had a message. The message was to not give up, to not give into the world that was trying to tear us apart and break us into a million little pieces. The tree knows we are stronger than that, the tree understands that moving away has been hard on us, but the tree has so much hope for us and our future. Just like some of those names carved in the tree from long ago, the tree knows we can make it, that we can overcome any obstacle that life throws our way and we can fight it off with portal guns and batman capes and rawrlar all day long. The tree believes our love actually can last forever, and I do too.
